5 Comfortable Breastfeeding Positions For New Moms

New moms could find the task of breastfeeding daunting. Breastfeeding is an essential part of motherhood and it is important to find a comfortable position that works for both you and your baby. There are several different breastfeeding positions that you can try and each one has its own benefits

In the early days of breastfeeding,  you may find it easier to use the same hand for both breasts. This means you will hold your baby across your lap to feed on one breast and then to feed from the other breast, you'll hold your baby under your arm.

1. Cradle hold

This is one of the most common breastfeeding positions. In this position, you hold your baby with their head resting in the crook of your arm, with their body facing your body. Your baby's mouth should be level with your nipple and you can use a pillow or rolled-up blanket to support your arm and bring your baby closer to your breast.

2. Football hold

The football hold is another popular breastfeeding position that can be especially helpful for moms who had C-sections or those with larger breasts. To do the football hold, sit in a comfortable chair and tuck your baby under your arm, with their body resting on a nursing pillow or a rolled-up blanket. Use your hand to support their neck and head and guide them to latch on.

3. Side-lying hold

The side-lying hold is an excellent position for nighttime feedings or when you need to rest. Lie on your side with a pillow supporting your head and neck and your baby lying next to you facing your breast. Use your bottom arm to support your head and your top arm to guide your baby to latch on.

4. Cross-cradle hold

The cross-cradle hold is ideal for newborns or premature babies who need extra support. To perform the cross-cradle hold, sit in a comfortable chair and support your infant with the opposite arm to the breast you'll be nursing on. Support your baby's neck and head with your palm while guiding them to latch on.

5. Laid-back hold

The laid-back hold, also known as biological nurturing, is a position where the mom reclines back in a chair or on a bed, with her baby resting on her chest. This position allows baby to use their natural instincts to find and latch onto the breast. Mom can use pillows to support her back and neck and her baby's body.

If you believe you need help, there is no harm in approaching lactation consultants who can help you.
